What this number is
The type approval value describes a vehicle type or approved vehicle variant. AutoTyp uses it as the lookup key for Swiss vehicle type data.
Where can I find it?
You can usually find the value in field 24 of the Swiss vehicle registration document. The field is labelled "Typengenehmigung", "Réception par type" and "Approvazione del tipo".
What does it look like?
Typical values look like 1AA101, 1VB752, 3NC504 or 3RA108.

Vehicle types
AutoTyp is not only about cars. The type records can include passenger cars, light vehicles, vans, motorhomes, trailers and special vehicles. Tax support may still be limited to passenger or light-vehicle formulas for many cantons.
